The fossil insects from the Crato Member (part of the Santana Formation) are known for the very detailed and colourful preservation. The good condition of the fossils is result of the special environment conditions of the sediment. The substance of the embedded insects is replaced by servile iron minerals (Siderite, limonite, etc.). So that this locality deliver some of the best and finest preserved insect fossils of the world.
