This is a large fossil Messel fish of the species Cyclurus kehreri with a length of approximately 236 mm. This species is also known as Messel Mudfish, Bowfin or Amia kehreri. A flaw under the dorsal fin is only visible in transmitted back light, this seems to have been slightly colored too back in the days. This is minor flaw practically invisible under normal light conditions. The long dorsal bowfin is nicely positioned on this this fossil specimen. Overall, this is a nice, large and typical Messel fossil. | |||
