Products description

Here we have a very detailed preserved caproid  of the species Rhenocystis latipendunculata from the Lower Devonian of Bundenbach. This group of echinoderms is now classified under the Stylophorans (Stylophora Gill & Caster, 1960). For a long time, there was discussion about a possible relationship between stylophorans, particularly Rhenocystis, and a stem lineage of vertebrates. As part of the so-called "Calcichordate Hypothesis," it was proposed that chordates (cephalochordates, urochordates, and craniates) evolved independently from a lineage of extinct mitrates, thus considering echinoderms and chordates as sister groups. Stylophorans like Rhenocystis show partially bilateral symmetrical anatomy, whereas most echinoderms exhibit pentaradial symmetry. However, this Calcichordate Hypothesis has been definitively disproven. The uncertainty regarding the systematic position of these echinoderms is still evident in the term "Flachtiere" ("flat animals"), which is used in the Bundenbach region. In contrast, the term "Carpoidea" is more commonly used in other localities. The Rhenocystis itself measures approximately 32 x 15 mm.
