Products description

Here we present a rare trilobite specimen from Morocco from the 90s, of the species Treveropyge maura. This species was sold under the genus Heliopyge at the time. In the 1990s, Heliopyge was also a rare and sought-after trilobite. Due to its popularity, the name Heliopyge was often used as a generic term in the fossil trade for various other trilobites of the family Asteropyginae.

According to Bignon & Cronier (2013), the group of classic Moroccan Heliopyge-like species can no longer be placed in the genus Treveropyge. In their work, Treveropyge maura and Treveropyge marokkensis Schraut, 2000 were explicitly excluded. Although these taxa are closely related to Treveropyge, they do not fit into the genus. Bignon & Cronier did not assign these species to any other genus. Therefore, they should be considered as nomen dubium or continue to be referred to as Treveropyge.

In the present specimen, only the right cheek spine has been restored. Fully extended, the trilobite measures approximately 70 mm.
