Brachiopods are a group of marine organisms characterized by their bivalve shells, often mistaken for mollusks. The oldest fossil records of brachiopods date back to the early Cambrian. These organisms have left an impressive fossil record that extends to the present day. During the Paleozoic era, brachiopods were particularly diverse and numerous. They evolved into over 12,000 species, many of which lived in various marine environments. Some species preferred shallow, warm seas, while others were found in deeper, cooler waters. Brachiopods experienced several mass extinctions but have survived to this day in reduced diversity. A notable example of a fossil brachiopod species is Lingula anatina, considered a living fossil as it has changed little since the Ordovician. Today, there are still about 300 species and 100 genera of brachiopods found in various marine habitats.
There is evidence that precursors of brachiopods already lived in the Ediacaran. An interesting hypothesis suggests that the Halkieriida, a group of fossil organisms from the Lower Cambrian, could be possible early ancestors of brachiopods. (Conway Morris, S., & Peel, J. S. (1995)) These organisms show a combination of features found in both brachiopods and mollusks. In this category of our fossil shop, we offer some brachiopod fossils for sale.
