Here is a wonderful and very rare Silurian Dudley Crinoid . This sea lilies has the calyx slightly opened so that fine feeding arms are nicely exposed so that they show also the Pinnulae. The Crown witout the stem is about 27 mm long. Crinoids from Dudley are very rare specialy if they come from the Nodular Beds like this specimen. The Nodular Beds are the riff limestone’s in Dudley that where not suitable for progressing. This lime stones are today the only exposed rock that is accessible in Dudly as ou can see on the locality picture. They contain many corals and bryozoans also brachiopods as well. It is a typical Silurian riff. However all other fossils are very rare in this limestone beds. The best and most 3dimensinal preserved Dudley Crinoids are known from the Nodular beds anyway. Today is the Wrens Nest site in Dudley is strictly protected. It is only allowed to pick up lose rocks so that we will not see many new material from this classical paleontological locality. | |||
