Here is a special Devonian - Trilobite from Morocco of the species Ceratarges aries.
This outstanding Trilobite is completely prepared in Germany so this fossil got a aesthetic and a superb detail level.
This Ceratages species is known for quite a while from Morocco but finally it got scientific correctly discriped by Viersen & Prescher in 2011. It seems that this very interesting trilobite species show a high diversity and variability of species features. What is not too unusual on Lichid - Trilobites. Viersen & Prescher remark the high variability of the spine pair on the occipital ring that can even not be present like on this specimen of Ceratarges aries. Also the central pygidial spine seems to bee very variable. But the secondary pygidial spines seem to be a quite static species feature. Like the holotype (NHMM 2011 003) shows this specimen also three secondary spines between the 4 long primary pygidial spines. Also is the central spine of the secondary spine group to be slightly longer. Viersen & Prescher also mention servile times that Ceratarges aries is unfortunately very rare. So that the absolute variability range of this Ceratages species in not exactly known. This specimen was collected from the Septimopeltis level that slightly higher in the profile of Jebel Zireg than the classical Ceratages couce. In our observations from 2006 seems Ceratarges aries to occurs in a higher percentage in this layer. |
