| Here is a multiple trilobite plate from the "Week Formation" of Utah. On this plate are three trilobites of the species Cedaria minor together with a rare head shield of Norwoodia boninoi. The largest Cedaria minor is shown from the ventral side and presenting nicely its hypostome. The species Norwoodia boninoi was just recently described by durch Robison & Babcock in 2011. This trilobite was described back in 2003 by Shanan Peters along with servile other "Weeks Formation" trilobite taxa. However his 2003 dissertation got never officially published. But it got quite widely known and it was as a PDF on the internet pages of the "Department of Geoscience" of the "Wisconsis-Madison University". So it was also citied by later publications. It is hard to tell if the new taxa Norwoodia boninoi or the older taxa Norwoodia bellaspina is the valid. There is no clarification about the status of the Peters publication in Robison & Babcock 2011. But is absolutely clear that both taxa are describing the same trilobite species becourse Peters 2003 and Robison & Babcock 2011 are using one and the same fossil in the "Smithsonian Museum" under the number Number USNM 437971 as holotype. So it is might be possible that Norwoodia bellaspina falls under the ICZN rules like „nomen protectum“ or „nomen conservandum“ but in the other hand Shanan Peters dissertation seems to be never formally published. | |||
