Here is a large Hildoceras lusitanicum from the lower jurassic of Whitby. The genus Hildoceras was named by Hyatt in 1876 after the abbess St. Hilda. In a legend should have St. Hilda banned a plague of snakes into stone and throw them over the cliff near the Whitby Abby. So that thay still can be found today as ammonites or so called "Whitby Snake Stones". | |||
