This is a "Solnhofen Limulus" of the species Mesolimulus walchi witch tack from Eichstätt. The limulus trail runs half circular, neaarly spiral shaped over the plate. The limulus it self is shown from its ventral (lower body side) and is about 148 mm long. The plate offers a nice dendrite drawing.
Mesolimulus walchi is one of the few fossils where the trace fossil is found together with its creator. The trace fossil of a limulus is assigned to the ichnospecies Kouphichnium lithographicum (Oppel, 1862). These limulus tracks where originally misinterpreted as trackways of fish like amphibian, birds including Archaeopteryx or Pterodactyls even jumping mammals. Later and due finds like this piece and the compensation with recent limulus trackways was this ichnospecies assignable to the biospecies of its creator. Theoretical can have a ichnospecies more than one creating biospecies.
