Presented is a  spectacular fossil of a rare species Rhabdocidaris orbignyana echiniod. It is from from the late Jurassic of the Painten quarry, near Solnhofen. The fossil sea urchin finely exhibits the secondary and the primary spines.  The diameter of this specimen diameter is105 mm. The longest spine is about 102 mm long. It is noteworthy that sea urchin fossils are generally very rare from the lithographic Limestone of Solnhofen or Eichstätt. At the Painten site they are not quite so rare. However specimens of the genus Rhabdocidaris are always rare. This fossil shows excellent preservation. The fine surface details were meticulously prepared.
