Here is a fossil insect of the genus Plecia from the Green River Formation of the Majestic state of Colorado. This specimen likely belongs to the species Plecia simlilkameena maybe also Plecia axeliana Cockerell 1915. However tPlecia pealei seems unlikely in this case due to the wing veining. Usualy most "Love Bugs" from the Green River Formation are labeled as Plecia pealei. However, it is worth taking closer look insect fossils. This is a female specimen and it is noteworthy female Lovebugs have the tendency to vary considerably in size. The recent March flie species Plecia americana Hardy, 1940 show a variation of 5-9 mm in length. This fossil specimen measures about 10 x 8 mm as it is on the matrix.
