Here is a very rare cretaceous starfish fossil that belongs to the species Calliderma smithae from Kursk in Russia. Starfish fossils of the genus Calliderma are widely distributed but only extremely rarely found as articulated specimens. Usually only the isolated edge plates are been found. These are not that uncommon in Rügen's chalk. But almost never complete. This Calliderma smithae, however, has been preserved completely and in great detail. The fossil starfish itself measures approximately 45 mm in diameter. This piece is an absolute rarity and a top decorative showpiece. | |||
