This is a huge fossil sponge from the Devonian of Morocco. In particular, the branching appearance and tube-like habit are in good agreement with the genus Heliospongia. However a reliable determination would have to consider significantly more features. The long spiny external specula are remarkable. This sponge had cactus like appearance. This limestone concretion was found on the way back from the Drotops megalomanicus couche on the Jebel Marakib right Alnif. The fossil still offers considerable potential for further preparation. The fossil sponge itself measures approximately 250 mm in length. | |||
