This is a rare proetid trilobite of the species Griffithides (Bollandia) globiceps from the carboniferous limestone bed of Antoing in Belgium.
The species was originally described by Phillips in 1836 as Asaphus globiceps. Later, in 1843, Portlock placed it in the genus Griffithides, which he rebuilt. Oldham in 1846 selected Asaphus globiceps as the type species of Griffithides, but Vogdes, in 1890 replaced it with Griffithides longiceps Portlock, 1843. Reed, 1943 created the subgenus Bollandia for Asaphus globiceps and other related species. This subgenus is still recognized today. The species Griffithides (Bollandia) globiceps has an interesting and turbulent past. This specimen offers good preservation with some nice details. |
