Here is an interesting trilobite of the species Changaspis elongata from the Lower Cambrian of China. This specimen shows an exuvia, which is essentially a molted exoskeleton. The thorax, along with the free cheeks (libegena) and the hypostome, are still connected. The cephalon has shifted forward. This piece serves as a fascinating example of how, in some Corynexochida*, the free cheeks remain attached to the rostral plate via the hypostome. Such a type of molting is relatively common among Cambrian trilobites. (*This also occurs at least in the Ptychopariida.) | |||
