Here is a plate with several detailed Edrioasteroidea of the species Spinadiscus lefebvrei. The largest specimen on this piece measures about 16 mm in diameter. Edrioasteroidea are an extinct class of echinoderms that lived from the Cambrian to the Middle Permian. They had a disc-shaped body with five radially arranged ambulacral fields. These organisms were sessile suspension feeders, likely attaching themselves to substrates or hardgrounds and filtering planktonic organisms from the water. They developed their greatest diversity already during the Ordovician period. | |||
