Here is a rare fossil male staminate cone of the Montana sequoia Metasequoia occidentalis. The male inflorescences of Metasequoia are catkins-like structures that grow in panicles and produce pollen that is dispersed by the wind to pollinate the female cones. This fossil staminate cone measures about 40 mm in length. |
