Products description

Here is a large and detailed trilobite of the genus Metacanthina from Morocco, originating from an unusual locality. The specimen comes from the Devonian of the Casablanca area in northern Morocco. Fully outstretched, the trilobite would have reached a length of about 79 mm.

This form was described by Richter (1943) under open nomenclature as Metacanthina sp. A. Today it is often identified either as the “true” Metacanthina barrandei or also as Hollardops barrandei. The latter is definitely incorrect, since Metacanthina barrandei is the type species of the genus Metacanthina PILLET, 1954.

Furthermore, the terminal pygidial spine of Richter’s Metacanthina variety A appears to be too long to support an assignment to Metacanthina barrandei (Oehlert, 1889).
