The famous Burgess shale and its unique and famous fossil beds was discovered in the year 1909 by Charles Doolittle Walcott. Since 1981 is this fossil lagerstaette a UNESCO World Heritage Site because its localisation in the Yoho National Park and of course also its high significance for the understanding of the early life on our planet.
