This is a fossil fish of the species Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation. The fossil measures approximately 62 mm in length.
This specimen is a so‑called “split fish.” Fossils from these layers are usually exposed simply by splitting the rock slabs. However, this process often results in the loss of small amounts of fossil material. For this reason, many fossils from Wyoming show minor restored or color‑enhanced areas. Often this involves only a few fin rays, though other parts may also be subtly retouched. The coloration is typically very discreet and intended to enhance the overall appearance. In fact, completely unrestored Green River fish fossils are relatively rare.
This fossil is a typical example from the split layers of the Green River Formation, where slight color enhancements are to be expected.
